LESSON 4. SPIRITUAL GIFTS. K Gerner BA

PROPHECY, TONGUES  & INTERPRETATION

1 Cor 12:10..

10      To another the working of miracles; to another prophecy; to another discerning of spirits; to another divers kinds of tongues; to another the interpretation of tongues:

(KJV)

(A) GIFT OF TONGUES.

The SIGN and GIFT of tongues must be distinguished

SIGN of tongues is for ALL BELIEVERS. It is praise from MAN TO GOD.

Mark 16:15   And he said unto them, Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature.

16                  He that believeth and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believeth not shall be damned.

17                  And these signs shall follow them that believe; In my name shall they cast out devils; they shall speak with new tongues;

GIFT OF TONGUES GIVEN TO SELECTED INDIVIDUAL IN A MEETING, followed by interpretation AS IT IS FROM GOD TO MAN

1 Cor 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with tongues? do all interpret? (KJV)

(1) DEFINITION

This is Gift of giving a Message from God in another language

 (i) Everyone speaks in tongues at Baptism  of Spirit.

Ac.10:46  For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God.

Acts 11:15 And as I began to speak, the Holy Ghost fell on them, as on us at the beginning.

Acts 11:16 Then remembered I the word of the Lord, how that he said, John indeed baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost.

Tongues  of praise can be spoken SIMULTANEOUSLY by all at a Meeting

1 COR 14:2For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries.

(ii) Not everyone gives Messages in tongues at once

1 Cor 12:30  Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak in tongues? Do all interpret? (NIV)

There must be a quite after that message to allow interpretation

(iii) Messages in tongues are given  to stop noisy meetings

when God wants to speak and are comparatively easy to give with little faith required as against speaking in English.

  (2) EXAMPLE

(i) Found in writing on Wall in Daniel

Daniel 5:24 Therefore he sent the hand that wrote the inscription. (NIV)

Daniel 5:25 "This is the inscription that was written: MENE, MENE, TEKEL, PARSIN (NIV)

Daniel 5:26 "This is what these words mean: Mene: God has numbered the days of your reign and brought it to an end. (NIV)

Daniel 5:27 Tekel: You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. (NIV)

Daniel 5:28 Peres: Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and Persians." (NIV)

This stopped the FEAST and pronounced judgement from God.

(3) PERSONAL EXAMPLE;

SIDMOUTH TONGUES "I AM COVENANT KEEPING GOD AND SAVIOUR "

 (4) GREEK STUDY OF TONGUES, GIFT OF

(i). glossa  ^1100^ is used of GIVING MESSAGES

(1) the "tongues... like as of fire"

not addressed primarily to the audience but consisted

in recounting "the mighty works of God"; cf. <2:46>; in 1 Cor.,

<chapters 12> and <14>, the use of the gift of "tongues" is mentioned

as exercised in the gatherings of local churches; <12:10> speaks of

the gift in general terms, and couples with it that of "the

interpretation of tongues"; <chapt. 14> gives instruction concerning

the use of the gift, the paramount object being the edification of

the church; unless the "tongue" was interpreted the speaker would

speak "not unto men, but unto God," <v. 2>; he would edify himself

alone, <v. 4>, unless he interpreted, <v. 5>, in which case his

interpretation would be of the same value as the superior gift of

prophesying, as he would edify the church, <vv. 4-6>; he must pray

that he may interpret, <v. 13>; if there were no interpreter, he must

keep silence, <v. 28>, for all things were to be done "unto

edifying," <v. 26>. "If I come... speaking with tongues, what shall I

profit you," says the apostle (expressing the great object in all

oral ministry), "unless I speak to you either by way of revelation,

or of knowledge, or of prophesying, or of teaching?" <v. 6>.

"Tongues" were for a sign, not to believers, but to unbelievers, <v.

22>, and especially to unbelieving Jews (see <v. 21>): cf. the

 passages in the Acts.

(ii). dialektos ^ 1258^,= dialect and language

 "language" (Eng., "dialect"), is rendered

 "tongue" in the KJV of <Acts 1:19; 2:6,8; 21:40; 22:2; 26:14>.

Acts 2:6 Now when this was noised abroad, the multitude came together, and were confounded, because that every man heard them speak in his own language. (KJV)

Acts 26:14 And when we were all fallen to the earth, I heard a voice speaking unto me, and saying in the Hebrew tongue, Saul, Saul, why persecutest thou me? it is hard for thee to kick against the pricks. (KJV)

(iii) PENTECOST

On the Day of Pentecost, the followers of Christ "were

all filled    with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other  tongues, as the  Spirit gave them utterance"

Acts 2:4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (KJV)

Acts 2:10Phrygia, and Pamphylia, in Egypt, and in the parts of Libya about Cyrene, and strangers of Rome, Jews and proselytes,

11        Cretes and Arabians, we do hear them speak in our tongues the wonderful works of God. (KJV)

The people assembled in  Jerusalem for this feast came from various

Roman provinces representing a variety of languages. They were  astonished to hear the  disciples speaking of God's works in their own  languages. Some have suggested that the miracle was in the hearing  rather than in the speaking.  Peter preached to them in their common Hebrew about Christ being accepted by God in Heaven on our behalf

ACT 2:31-33

31        He seeing this before spake of the resurrection of Christ, that his soul was not left in hell, neither his flesh did see corruption.

32        This Jesus hath God raised up, whereof we all are witnesses.

33        Therefore being by the right hand of God exalted, and having received of the Father the promise of the Holy Ghost, he hath shed forth this, which ye now see and hear. (KJV)

LINK SIGN OF TONGUES WITH TINKLING GONG WITH BELLS ON HIGH PRIESTS  GARMENT

1 Cor 13:1 tough I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become as sounding brass, or a tinkling cymbal.

EQUIVALENT TO OT         BELLS

Exod 28:33And beneath upon the hem of it thou shalt make pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, round about the hem thereof; and bells of gold between them round about:   (KJV)

Exod 39:25   And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates upon the hem of the robe, round about between the pomegranates;   (KJV)

Exod 39:25   And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates upon the hem of the robe, round about between the pomegranates;   (KJV)

Zech 14:20   In that day shall there be upon the bells of the horses, HOLINESS UNTO THE LORD; and the pots in the Lord's house shall be like the bowls before the altar.   (KJV)

 (IV) TONGUES AS A GIFT

Tongues as a gift of the Spirit is especially prominent in <1 Corinthians 12> and <14>. In <1 Corinthians 13> the  apostle Paul puts the gift of tongues in perspective by affirming that  though we "speak with the tongues of men and of angels" <v. 1>,

In <1 Corinthians 14> Paul deals more specifically with the gift

of tongues and its exercise in the church. In this chapter the tongue

is not an intelligible language, for it cannot be understood by the

listeners. Therefore, a parallel to the gift of tongues is the gift

 of interpretation.

This gift is never intended for

 (A) self-exaltation  but for the praise and glorification of God.

Paul  does not prohibit speaking in tongues in a public service .

1 Cor 14:39 Wherefore, brethren, covet to prophesy, and forbid not to speak with tongues. (KJV)

. DO NOT FORBID TONGUES IN GOSPEL SERVICE.

(B)  GIFT OF TONGUES MAY BE USED TO INTERRUPT ORDER OF NOISY SERVICE,

1 Cor 14:5-6

5          I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying.

6          Now, brethren, if I come unto you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you, except I shall speak to you either by revelation, or by knowledge, or by prophesying, or by doctrine?

(KJV)

(C)  PAUL USED SIGN OF TONGUES IN PRIVATE PLACE  TO STIR UP OTHER  GIFTS

. But he seems to assign it to a lesser place IN PUBLIC MEETINGS than the gift of prophecy.

Paul claims for himself the gift of tongues-speaking, but IN PRIVATE he exercised this ability to praise God to build Himself up for public meetings

1 Cor 14:18 I thank my God, I speak with tongues more than ye all: (KJV)

1 Cor 14:19 Yet in the church I had rather speak five words with my understanding, that by my voice I might teach others also, than ten thousand words in an unknown tongue. (KJV)

 (v)  USE OF THE GIFT IN A SERVICE:

(I)     The gift of tongues is to be exercised with restraint and in  an orderly way. . The person who speaks in an unknown tongue is to pray that he may interpret <

1 Cor 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. (KJV)

Or, someone else is to  interpret what he says.

 (2) Only two or three persons are to speak, AT ONE TIME each having an interpretation of what he says. Each is also to speak in turn. If these criteria are not met, they are to remain silent <

1 Cor 14:27 27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret.

28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in

the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God. (KJV)

 (3) The gifts of speaking in tongues and their interpretation are to be Spirit inspired. Paul also points out that tongues are a sign to unbelievers. If these guidelines are not observed, unbelievers who are present will conclude that the people of the church are out of their minds, UNLESS THEY KNOW LANGUAGE.

CF EGYPTIAN DOCTOR AT HOLYWOOD.

 (4)     The phenomenon of speaking in tongues described in the New

Testament is not some psychological arousal of human emotions that

results in strange sounds. This is a genuine work of the Holy Spirit, althought it is called a MYSTERY, so that we should not try to understand it with the mind

1 Cor 14:2 or he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries. (KJV)

The use of this GIFT privately or in a service, should make the presence of God the Father and the Lord Jesus more real

John 16:13-15

13   Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come.

14   He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15      All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you. (KJV)

It can also be used in the prayer line, where confidentiality is important or the minister does not know exactly what he should pray for

Romans 8:26-27

26   Likewise the Spirit also helpeth our infirmities: for we know not what we should pray for as we ought: but the Spirit itself maketh intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered.

27   And he that searcheth the hearts knoweth what is the mind of the Spirit, because he maketh intercession for the saints according to the will of God.

(KJV)

 (B) INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES

(1) DEFINITION:

This gives to the hearer a showing forth of the meaning of the message given in tongues. This is NOT a word for word translation , but gives a general showing forth of what God wishes to convey.

  (2) ILLUSTRATION

5 words on tongues in Daniel 5, become 28 in the interpretation. Interpretation may VARY IN LENGTH from Message.

 (3) MEANS OF WORKING

(a) Believer  may speak out message but must STOP when anointing lifts

  (b) If nobody else interprets, the one giving the message should pray and receive the Interpretation

1 Cor 14:13 For this reason anyone who speaks in a tongue should pray that he may interpret what he says. (NIV)

 (c) This requires more faith as every word is more easily understood .

(d) Try to spread the Gifts . One person should not give more than two or three messages at a time, and SOMEBODY (not necessarily the Pastor) should give an interpretation

1 Cor 14:27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two-- or at the most three-should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret.

1 Cor 14:28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and God. (NIV)

 (e) There should be ample  quietness after a Tongues message and not interruption by choruses etc.

(f)) God will give several people same interpretation  to confirm message, and if you missed speaking it out, this will confirm the Gift to you when somebody else gives the same message. Do not be discouraged but speak out the next time !

( 4)  MEANING OF GREEK IN THE BIBLE

  INTERPRET, INTERPRETATION, INTERPRETER

         2. diermeneuo ^1329^, a strengthened form of No. 1 (dia, "through," used intensively), signifies "to interpret fully, to explain." In <Luke 24:27>, it is used of Christ in interpreting to  the two on the way to Emmaus "in all the Scriptures the things  concerning Himself," RV, "interpreted" (KJV, "expounded"); in

Luke 24:27 And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself. (KJV)

it is rendered "is by interpretation,"(ACTS.9:36.DORCAS = TABITHA 1 Cor 12:30 Have all the gifts of healing? do all speak with

tongues?              do all interpret? (KJV)

1 Cor 14:5 I would that ye all spake with tongues, but rather that ye prophesied: for greater is he that prophesieth than he that speaketh with tongues, except he interpret, that the church may receive edifying. (KJV)

1 Cor 14:13 Wherefore let him that speaketh in an unknown tongue pray that he may interpret. (KJV)

1 Cor 14:27 If any man speak in an unknown tongue, let it be by two, or at the most by three, and that by course; and let one interpret. (KJV)

1 Cor 14:5,13, 27>, it is used with reference to the temporary gift of tongues in the churches; this gift was inferior in character to that of prophesying unless he who spoke in a "tongue" interpreted his words, <14:5>; he was, indeed, to pray that he might interpret, <v. 13>; one was to interpret

Greek = heis 1 Cor 14:27 = ONE only at a time

  © GIFT OF PROPHECY

1 Cor 14:31 For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. (KJV)

  (A) DEFINITION:

Nearly the same as Interpretation, without a preliminary utterance in

tongues.

  (B) PURPOSE

(1) It can convict of sin  and lead to repentance

1 Cor 14:24 But if all prophesy, and there come in one that believeth not, or one unlearned, he is convinced of all, he is judged of all: (KJV)

1 Cor 14:25 And thus are the secrets of his heart made manifest; and so falling down on his face he will worship God, and report that God is in you of a truth. (KJV)

 (2) It can TEACH OR COMFORT

1 Cor 14:31  For ye may all prophesy one by one, that all may learn, and all may be comforted. (KJV)

 (3) It can lead to the OFFICE of PROPHET

1 Cor 12:28  And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. (KJV)

 (4) WARN OR ENCOURAGE GOD'S PEOPLE & FORETELL THINGS TO COME

Predictions about the future and the end-time; special messages

from God, often uttered through human spokesmen, which indicate the

divine will for mankind on earth and in heaven.

(i)     The focus of all prophetic truth is Jesus Christ <Heb. 1:2;

Luke  24:25-27>, who was destined to be the greatest prophet <Deut.

18:15-18>. He declared God's truth in this age <John 3:31-33> and the

age to come <Is. 2:2-4>. As the embodiment of truth <John 1:1>,

Christ fully radiated the brilliance of God which the earlier

 prophets reflected only partially.

(ii) Prophecy was technically the task of the prophet. But all truth

or revelation is prophetic, pointing to some future person, event, or thing,

The full panorama of God's will takes many forms; it may be

expressed through people, events, and objects.

Historical events such as the PASSOVER anticipated Jesus Christ <John 1:29>,

as did various objects  including MANNA <John 6:31-35> and the

 inner VEIL <Matt. 27:51; Heb. 10:20>
.

(iii)Prophecy may also be expressed in many different forms through the prophet himself, whether by his mouth or some bodily action. The prophets received God's messages from the voice of an angel <

Gen. 22:15-19>, the voice of God, a dream <Daniel 2>, or a vision <Eze.

40:2ff.>. The prophetic speech might range from the sombre reading of

a father's last will <Genesis 49> to an exultant anthem to be sung in

 the Temple <Ps. 96:1,13>.

(iv)    Prophecy declared God's word for all time, so the time of

fulfilment of a prophecy is rarely indicated in the Bible.

Exceptions to this rule include the timetable assigned to Daniel's

seventy weeks' prophecy <Dan. 9:24-27>, the prophecy of Peter's

 denial <Matt. 26:34>, and predictions of someone's death <Jer.

28:16-17>. The common problem of knowing the time for the fulfilment

of a prophecy is acknowledged by Peter <2 Pet. 1:11>. This problem is

due to several factors. First, some prophecies appear together, as if

they would be fulfilled simultaneously. For example, <Isaiah 61:1-2>

has already been fulfilled, according to <Luke 4:18-19>, but <Isaiah

61:2>, which adjoins it, awaits fulfilment. The same is true of

<Zechariah 9:9-10>. The prophets saw the mountain peaks of prophetic

events but not the valleys of time in between.

(v) Another factor that complicates the problem is the ambiguity of tenses in the Hebrew language, which distinguishes type of action but not time of action. Cf`”in that day”

The prophets focused on the reality of their prophecies and not the time of their fulfilment. In their minds their prophecies were already accomplished, primarily because they knew God was in charge of history.

(vi)  Finally, since the prophets' messages had eternal force, it is often difficult to tell whether they applied their messages to their day or the future

. For example, <Isaiah 7:14> promised a son who

could be a contemporary of Isaiah (perhaps the prophet's son in

<8:3>, and <18> or the son of Hezekiah the king in <Isaiah 36--39>)

or Jesus <Matt. 1:23>, or both.

  (C) EXAMPLES IN BIBLE

ANGEL foretells Birth of Christ to Mary

Luke 1:26-38.Now in the sixth month the angel Gabriel was sent by God to a city of Galilee named Nazareth, 27 to a virgin betrothed to a man whose name was Joseph, of the house of David. The virgin's name was Mary. 28 And having come in, the angel said to her,"Rejoice, highly favored one, the Lord is with you; blessed are you among women!"

29 But when she saw him, she was troubled at his saying, and considered what manner of greeting this was. 30 Then the angel said to her, "Do not be afraid, Mary, for you have found favor with God. 31 And behold, you will conceive in your womb and bring forth a Son, and shall call His name JESUS. 32 He will be great, and will be called the Son of the Highest; and the Lord God will give Him the throne of His father David. 33 And He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of His kingdom there will be no end."

34 Then Mary said to the angel, "How can this be, since I do not know a man?"

35 And the angel answered and said to her,"The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God. 36 Now indeed, Elizabeth your relative has also conceived a son in her old age; and this is now the sixth month for her who was called barren. 37 For with God nothing will be impossible."

38 Then Mary said, "Behold the maidservant of the Lord! Let it be to me according to your word." And the angel departed from her. NKJV

(1)  JESUS FORETOLD PETER DENIAL & SAVED HIM FROM SUICIDE ?

Matt 26:3 4 Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. (KJV)

Luke 22:31 And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: :32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren. (KJV)

 (2) AGABUS FORETOLD PAUL'S TROUBLES AT JERUSALEM BUT DID NOT CONTROL HIM FROM GOING . Paul was left FREE TO RESPOND.

Acts 21:4 And finding disciples, we tarried there seven days: who said to Paul through the Spirit, that he should not go up to Jerusalem. (KJV)

Acts 21:9 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. 10 And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judea a certain prophet, named Agabus. :11 And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. :12 And when we heard these things, both we, and they of that place, besought him not to go up to Jerusalem. :13 Then Paul answered, What mean ye to weep and to break mine heart? for I am ready not to be bound only, but also to die at Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.:14 And when he would not be persuaded, we ceased, saying, The will of the Lord be done. (KJV)

THIS MESSAGE CONFIRMED WHAT PAUL HAD ALREADY HAD FROM OTHER CHURCHES, BUT HE WAS LEFT FREE TO MAKE HIS OWN DECISION ON ACTION.

BE CAREFUL OF PROPHECY WHICH SEEKS TO CONTROL OR DOES NOT CORRESPOND TO PREVIOUS LEADINGS OF THE SPIRIT.  REPSONSE SHOULD BE LEFT FREE
