Paraded piety unreal: -- In the olden times, even the best rooms were usually of bare brick or stone, damp and mouldy, but over these in great houses, when the family was resident, were hung up arras, or hangings of rich material, between which and the wall persons might conceal themselves, so that literally walls had ears. It is to be feared that many a brave shew of godliness is but an arras to conceal rank hypocrisy; and this accounts for some men's religion being but occasional, since it is folded up or exposed to view as need may demand. Is there no room for conscience to pry between thy feigned profession and thy real ungodliness, and bear witness against thee?(C. H. Spurgeon.)

STORY -- When Dr. Donne took possession of his first living, he walked into the churchyard as the sexton was digging a grave; and on his throwing up a skull, the doctor took it into his hands, to indulge in serious contemplation. On looking at it, he found a headless nail sticking in the temple, which he secretly drew out, and wrapped it in the corner of his handkerchief. He then asked the gravedigger whether he knew whose skull it was. He said he did, adding it had been a man's who kept a brandy shop -- a drunken fellow, who one night, having taken two quarts of ardent spirits, was found dead in his bed the next morning. "Had he a wife?" "Yes." "Is she living?" "Yes." "What character does she bear?" "A very good one; only her neighbours reflect on her because she married the day after her husband was buried. This was enough for the doctor, who, in the course of visiting his parishioners, called on her. He asked her several questions, and, among others, of what sickness her husband died. She giving him the same account, he suddenly opened the handkerchief, and cried, in an authoritative voice, "Woman, do you know this nail?" She was struck with horror at the unexpected question, instantly acknowledged that she had murdered her husband, and was afterwards tried and execuTED(Bible illlllustrated)

1. THE LAW.

(A) Its right and wrong uses

(i)     The place of the Law is to convict the sinner. The essence of its message can be summed up as LOVE to God and man out of as PURE HEART, from a good conscience and faith. THIS IS ITS RIGHT USE AND AIM.

1TI 1:5 NIV The goal of this command is love, which comes from a pure heart and a good conscience and a sincere faith.

(ii) CORRUPT LAW TEACHERS however, have corrupted minds

1TI 6:5 NIV.. constant friction between men of corrupt mind, who have been robbed of the truth and who think that godliness is a means to financial gain.FOINN

THEIR CONSCIENCES were already seared.

1TI 4:2 Such teachings come through hypocritical liars, whose consciences have been seared as with a hot iron.

THEIR FAITH was REPROBATE.

2TI 3:8 NIV Just as Jannes and Jambres opposed Moses, so also these men oppose the truth--men of depraved minds, who, as far as the faith is concerned, are rejected.

WE CAN ONLY EXPECT VAIN TALKING FROM SUCH MEN.

1TI 1:6 NIV Some have wandered away from these and turned to meaningless talk.

THEY WANT TO BE LEADERS, BUT FAIL TO REALLY UNDERSTAND LAW

1TI 1:7 NIV They want to be teachers of the law, but they do not know what they are talking about or what they so confidently affirm.

TIT 1:10 NIV For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group.

(iii) AS CHRISTIANS WE MUST NOT THROW OVER THE OLD TESTAMENT.

THE LAW IS GOOD IF IT IS RIGHTLY USED.

1TI 1:8 NIV We know that the law is good if one uses it properly.

THE LAW IS NOT AIMED AT THE PRODUCTION OF GOOD WORKS WHICH GET A MAN TO HEAVEN, but rather it is aimed at PRODUCING A CONVICTION OF SIN IN THE SINNER.

1TI 1:9 NIV We also know that law is made not for the righteous but for lawbreakers and rebels, the ungodly and sinful, the unholy and irreligious; for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers,

Like the Gospel, the Law is AGAINST VICE and condemns those who are disobedient and unholy, profane ,blaspheming God, disobedient to parents, murderers, those living in illicit sex and unnatural relationships, to say nothing of those kidnapping people.

EXO 21:16 NIV "Anyone who kidnaps another and either sells him or still has him when he is caught must be put to death."

It is against those lying and swearing falsely, and anything that is against the HEALTHY (AV"sound".Gk.=hugaio) Teaching of God in the Law and the Gospel.

NOT TO BUILD UP FAVOUR WITH GOD OR EARN HIS LOVE

(B) RELATIONSHIP OF LAW TO THE GOSPEL.

(i)h are opposed to the same thing (=sin) and aim at the same result (= health) so that they have an effect on soul and body together.

LUK 5:31 NIV Jesus answered them, "It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick.

LUK 7:10 NIV Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well.

LUK 15:27 NIV 'Your brother has come,' he replied, 'and your father has killed the fattened calf because he has him back safe and sound.'

TIT 1:13 NIV This testimony is true. Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they will be sound in the faith

TIT 2:2 NIV Teach the older men to be temperate, worthy of respect, self-controlled, and sound in faith, in love and in endurance.

3JO 1:2 NIV Dear friend, I pray that you may enjoy good health and that all may go well with you, even as your soul is getting along well.

(ii) BY THE LAW THERE IS A KNOWLEDGE OF SIN AND A NEED OF FORGIVENESS.

Romans 3:19-20

19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin .KJV

WITHOUT THE LAW THER EIS NO FEAR OF GOD AND VERY SHALLOW REPENTANCE

2.THE GOSPEL

(a) STATEMENTS ON THE GOSPEL.

(A) The main TOPIC of the Gospel is THE GLORY OF GOD, since it shows His grace where the Law shows His holiness.

1TI 1:11 NIV that conforms to the glorious gospel of the blessed God,

(B) The TEACHING of this Gospel is entrusted to HUMANS like Paul and not now to angels.

1 Peter 1:12 To them it was revealed that, not to themselves, but to us they were ministering the things which now have been reported to you through those who have preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven — things which angels desire to look into.

NKJV

1CO 9:19 NIV Though I am free and belong to no man, I make myself a slave to everyone, to win as many as possible.

1TH 2:4 NIV  we speak as men approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel.

GAL 2:7 NIV.. they saw that I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles, just as Peter had been to the Jews.

(C) TIMELESS and UNCHANGING in character, the Gospel remains the same for all.

JUD 1:3 NIV Dear friends, although I was very eager to write to you about the salvation we share, I felt I had to write and urge you to contend for the faith that was once for all entrusted to the saints.

1TI 6:20 NIV Timothy, guard what has been entrusted to your care. Turn away from godless chatter and the opposing ideas of what is falsely called knowledge,

2TI 3:14 NIV But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it,

1JO 2:24 NIV See that what you have heard from the beginning remains in you. If it does, you also will remain in the Son and in the Father.

(D) TRUSTWORTHINESS is therefore, essential in Gospel preachers.

1CO 4:2 NIV Now it is required that those who have been given a trust must prove faithful.

1CO 7:25 NIV Now about virgins: I have no command from the Lord, but I give a judgement as one who by the Lord's mercy is trustworthy.

ACT 26:19 NIV "So then, King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the vision from heaven.

WHAT THEN, IS THE MESSAGE WHICH THE GOSPEL BRINGS ?

(b) SALVATION BY FAITH LEADING TO WORKS. Titus 3; 1- 8.

(1) The GOSPEL LEADS TO A DEFINITE DIVISION BETWEEN SAVED &UNSAVED

Each one is known by THEIR FRUITS.

(i) FRUITS of Salvation are seen in obedience. Titus 3:1

TIT 3:1 NIV Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good,

This touches on THE SPIRIT OF REBELLION AGAINST AUTHORITY among Jews, which was prevalent at the time also among the Cretans.

  GOD WANTS OBEDIENCE.

ROM 13:1 NIV Everyone must submit himself to the governing authorities, for there is no authority except that which God has established. The authorities that exist have been established by God.

1PE 2:13 NIV Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every authority instituted among men: whether to the king, as the supreme authority,

1TI 2:1 NIV I urge, then, first of all, that requests, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for everyone--

1TI 2:2 NIV for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.

THERE IS A MESSAGE HERE FOR IRELAND AND ELSEWHERE TODAY, BACKED BY EMPHASIS ON CONTROL OF THE TONGUE.

TIT 3:2 NIV to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men.

(ii) FRUITS OF UNREGENERATE MAN are seen , disobedience, out of a hard heart.

The unsaved man is deceived by a perverted will, living in the lusts and pleasures of his carnal mind, with malice, envy, pride, selfishness and hatred.

Ephesians 5: 5 For this you know, that no fornicator, unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and God. NKJV

6 Let no one deceive you with empty words, for because of these things the wrath of God comes upon the sons of disobedience. NKJV

(2) THE IMPACT OF SALVATION BEGINS WITH GOD

TIT 1:4 NIV To Titus, my true son in our common faith: Grace and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Savior.

ONLY GOD COULD LOVE SUCH A CHARACTER AS THIS !

This love appeared in all of Christ's life and work (John 3:16) and it is obvious that HUMAN EFFORT to DESERVE salvation is futile, as it springs from such a corrupt nature

GAL 2:16 NIV know that a man is not justified by observing the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ. So we, too, have put our faith in Christ Jesus that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by observing the law, because by observing the law no one will be justified.

GAL 3:11 NIV Clearly no one is justified before God by the law, because, "The righteous will live by faith."

EPH 2:8 NIV For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith--and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God--9 not by works, so that no one can boast.

(3) THE RESULTS OF SALVATION WILL BE SEEN IN A MAN'S LIFE THROUGH ;

(I) WATER BAPTISM.

TIT 3:5 NIV he saved us, not because of righteous things we had done, but because of his mercy. He saved us through the washing of rebirth and renewal by the Holy Spirit,

(Vine argues against this meaning using Eph.5.v.26 as Gk.parallel urging "washing of the Word"but the Greek verb here [Louo] is used of a TOTAL BATHING in John 13:16 and in the context of the Philippian jailer, he was BAPTISED after washing their stripes (Acts 16:33) while Heb.10:22 connects CONFESSION OF FAITH with this process, while other refs. show WATER BAPTISM was an integral part of salvation

JOH 3:5 NIV Jesus answered, "I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless he is born of water and the Spirit.

ACT 2:38 NIV Peter replied, "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

1PE 1:21 NIV Through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and glorified him, and so your faith and hope are in God.)

BEING BORN AGAIN is certainly a work of God (John 11 v 11-13)  but the challenge to Nicodemus in John 3 was to declare his faith openly, so that he had to be born of "water" and of the Spirit.

(ii) BAPTISM OF THE HOLY GHOST was also integral to salvation

TIT 3:6 NIV whom he poured out on us generously through Jesus Christ our Savior

Baptism in the Spirit is a work of God, but it must be followed by a continuous renewal

Gk aorist is here used "poured on us" to show point of time

ACT 2:17 NIV "'In the last days, God says, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your young men will see visions, your old men will dream dreams.

ACT 2:18 NIV Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days, and they will prophesy.

ACT 10:44 NIV While Peter was still speaking these words, the Holy Spirit came on all who heard the message.45 The circumcised believers who had come with Peter were astonished that the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out even on the Gentiles.46 For they heard them speaking in tongues and praising God.

THIS BAPTISM WAS PART OF SALVATION

ACT 2:38 NIV Peter replied, "Repent and be baptised, every one of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.39 The promise is for you and your children and for all who are far off--for all whom the Lord our God will call."

(iii) INHERITANCE

TIT 3:7 NIV so that, having been justified by his grace, we might become heirs having the hope of eternal life.

After justification BY GRACE through faith (not of works) the Spirit seals us as joint-heirs with Christ.

EPH 1:13 NIV And you also were included in Christ when you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation. Having believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit,14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God's possession--to the praise of his glory.

ROM 8:17 NIV Now if we are children, then we are heirs--heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory.

WE HAVE PRESENT ENJOYMENT BY THE SPIRIT OF OUR FUTURE HOPE & KNOWLEDGE OF GOD

1CO 2:10 NIV but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God.

(iv) GOOD WORKS MUST FOLLOW

TIT 3:8 NIV This is a trustworthy saying. And I want you to stress these things, so that those who have trusted in God may be careful to devote themselves to doing what is good.

Real salvation leads to a carrying out of God's will (Ephes 2:8-10) All of this teaching is a "faithful saying" to be boldly proclaimed with no part witheld. through religious prejudice or fear of man .God trusts us with this message !

WE HAVE AN EXAMPLE OF THIS IN ACTION IN THE CASE OF ;

 (c) PAUL'S OWN CONVERSION AND SALVATION. 1 Timothy 1:12-20

Paul continually praises God for his salvation, and the enabling power of God.

1TI 1:12 NIV I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who has given me strength, that he considered me faithful, appointing me to his service.

His life was completely in the hands of God and his power derived from Him.

PHI 4:13 NIV I can do everything through him who gives me strength.

2TI 2:1 NIV You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

2TI 4:17 NIV But the Lord stood at my side and gave me strength,

illustration: DOCTOR EXAMINES WIFE AND CALLS FOR PLIERS, HAMMER ETC. HUSBAND ANXIOUS “What is wrong with my wife ?””Don’t know yet, cannot get my bag open !!!”

HE DESCRIBES HIS PRE-CONVERSION BEING AS ;

(1) STATE

1TI 1:13 NIV Even though I was once a blasphemer

GK "RAILER"= 2 Tim 3:2.  He was a persecutor also in acting against God and an insolent man (Gk hubristos) Rom 1:30.

He was shown mercy he did not deserve (force of Greek passive here) because of his ignorance.

MAT 12:31 NIV And so I tell you, every sin and blasphemy will be forgiven men, but the blasphemy against the Spirit will not be forgiven.32 Anyone who speaks a word against the Son of Man will be forgiven, but anyone who speaks against the Holy Spirit will not be forgiven, either in this age or in the age to come.

GRACE was the means of his mercy and the Lord Jesus Christ was the centre of his faith and love here.

(2) SINNERS OF THE WORST FORM could take hope from his example.

1TI 1:15 NIV Here is a trustworthy saying that deserves full acceptance: Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners--of whom I am the worst.

This" faithful saying" shows the PRE-EXISTENCE OF CHRIST, WHO EMPTIED HIMSELF TO SAVE ALL WHO HAD MISSED THE MARK

ROM 3:23 NIV for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,

NOTE PAUL'S OWN SENSE OF CONTINUING UNWORTHINESS (" I am")

v.16 here shows a:

(a) Ground for hope for the worst sinners. None need hesitate now !

Illustration: DOCTOR I have bad dreams. One night in wigwam, another in tepee. Thr trouble is, you are two tense…

2PE 2:6 NIV if he condemned the cities of Sodom and Gomorrah by burning them to ashes, and made them an example of what is going to happen to the ungodly;

(b) A ground of praise to God for His sovereignty, as KING

1TI 1:17 NIV Now to the King eternal, immortal, invisible, the only God, be honour and glory for ever

He is the ONLY GOD with a plan that is absolute and pure, and true testimony should always draw attention to the Lord, rather than to our past sin.

(c) A sacred trust to Timothy

1TI 1:18 NIV Timothy, my son, I give you this instruction in keeping with the prophecies once made about you,

PROPHETIC WORDS played a great part in the selection of Timothy and his work.

AS GOD'S WORDS, prophecies can have a real power against the Devil

  (d) A WEAPON FOR TIMOTHY TO USE

1TI 1:18 NIV  by following them you may fight the good fight,

1TI 6:12 NIV Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

e) This must be accompanied by A GOOD CONSCIENCE

Trust in prophecy  is only possible through meeting conditions of holiness

1TI 1:19 NIV holding on to faith and a good conscience. Some have rejected these and so have shipwrecked their faith.

(This may refer to Hymnaeus & Philetus.2TI 2:17 NIV Their teaching will spread like gangrene. Among them are Hymenaeus and Philetus,(v:18 )  who have wandered away from the truth. They say that the resurrection has already taken place, and they destroy the faith of some.(19) Nevertheless, God's solid foundation stands firm, sealed with this inscription: "The Lord knows those who are his," and, "Everyone who confesses the name of the Lord must turn away from wickedness.")

(f) Paul was prepared to withdraw DIVINE PROTECTION and Satan then does a disciplinary work on those outside the protection of the Church.

1TI 1:20 NIV Among them are Hymenaeus and Alexander, whom I have handed over to Satan to be taught not to blaspheme.

The assembled saints can also deliver a person to Satan, who does a destructive work on a backsliders body for the good of his soul

1CO 5:5 NIV hand this man over to Satan, so that the sinful nature may be destroyed and his spirit saved on the day of the Lord.

GOD IS BEHIND THIS MEANS OF TEACHING HIS CHILDREN by discipline to prevent their ultimate destruction, if they continue to MISS THE VISION OF REMAINING IN THE BODY.

1CO 11:30 NIV That is why many among you are weak and sick, and a number of you have fallen asleep.31 But if we judged ourselves, we would not come under judgment.32 When we are judged by the Lord, we are being disciplined so that we will not be condemned with the world. (SICKNESS AND EVEN PHYSICAL DEATH are here suggested)

ILLUSTRATION; WATFORD MAN AND HARD HEART…

 (d) PAUL'S OWN CALL TO PREACH followed quickly after his salvation

   .2 Tim 1:8-14

(1) UNDERSTAND that God demands fearless testimony from new converts, as hardships and even prison may accompany Gospel ministry.

2TI 1:8 NIV So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner. But join with me in suffering for the gospel

(2) THE MESSAGE MUST BE UNDILUTED and include salvation, and sanctification on the basis of the Grace of God shown by the work of Christ in abolishing death and bringing life.

2TI 1:9 NIV who has saved us and called us to a holy life--not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace. This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time,

(3) ULTIMATELY this message and appointment is Divine and this must never be forgotten.

2TI 1:11 NIV And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.

ACT 20:28 NIV Keep watch over yourselves and all the flock of which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers

1TI 2:7 NIV And for this purpose I was appointed a herald and an apostle

THE IMMEDIATE CONSEQUENCES OF THIS CALL MAY BE SUFFERING

2TI 1:12 NIV That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

2CO 11:22 NIV.23 Are they servants of Christ? (I am out of my mind to  talk like this.) I am more. I have worked much harder, been in prison more frequently, been flogged more severely, and been exposed to death again and again.

THE FAITHFUL PREACHER CAN TRUST GOD TO KEEP HIM UNTIL JUDGEMENT DAY, IF HE CONTINUES IN SOUND TEACHING -- which is "Divine health", not mere human orthodoxy -- through the power of the indwelling Holy Spirit.

2TI 1:13 NIV What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.14 Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you--guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.
